Why Mental Health Matters to Me

Working in healthcare has always felt meaningful to me. At Eye-Q in Nigeria, I've seen how access to the right care can change people's lives. But over time I've also realized that health is not only about the body, but the mind is just as important, even if it's harder to notice when something is wrong.

In 2021, my family went through a very difficult period. We lost three loved ones in just a year and a half. Alongside that grief, I was also struggling personally, trying to figure out who I was and how to move forward. What helped me through that phase was leaning on my mentor and my family. They gave me perspective, reminded me to stay grounded, and slowly I began to feel more centered and at peace with myself. That time showed me how much difference the right support can make when you're struggling inside.

I've also seen how today's world affects our mental well-being. Last month, I deleted all my social media accounts for a month. Without that constant distraction, I read more, spent more time with family and friends, and actually managed to complete personal goals I had been putting off. I felt calmer and happier. But when I returned, I slipped back into old patterns of scrolling again. That taught me just how strong these influences are, and how much we need to be intentional about protecting our mental space.

My family's experience with my uncle came as a big shock. We didn't know what he was going through until it was too late, and that loss became the reason my brother and my aunt started Emoneeds. Their work has been about building a space where people can find support in ways we couldn't provide then. Watching them do that has been inspiring, and it has made me want to find my own way of becoming more actively involved in mental health too.

I truly believe mental health is not separate from healthcare. It is healthcare. Just as we would visit a doctor if our body felt unwell, our minds deserve the same care. Having seen the changes in myself when I had the right support, I know how important this is. And as I look ahead, I'm very interested in this space and want to devote my time, in some way or another, to helping people care for their mental well-being.

All of us, at some point, need someone to talk to. If you are struggling, please know you are not alone. If there is ever a way I can help, even in a small way, I would feel grateful to be part of that journey.

Thanks for reading.
